NOTICE: SFSS works on Unity 2019.1 as of June 2019, but doesn't make enough money to justify further development. Future support will be minimal. The Lightweight Render Pipeline (LWRP), and HD Render Pipeline (HDRP) are not supported, and there is no plan to add it.

No expensive image filters or pixel shaders are used to blur the shadows since it's neither mobile friendly or accurate. Instead, SFSS relies heavily on vertex shaders to compute accurate penumbras, umbras and antumbras in a single pass and a fraction of the performance cost. You get 2D shadows with better quality and performance on all platforms!
