Take control of your material import pipeline.
Enforce material naming conventions (Prefix/Suffix). Choose the storage location pattern that suits you. Assign a 'Shared' folder, for reusable materials that are Automatically assigned on import.
Select a default shader for all your newly imported assets, and BMI will try to match as many imported parameters to your new material as possible.
It's quick, easy to use, and once it's set up to your taste you'll never have to modify your settings again! (You'll also never be able to live without it).
Should work perfectly in Unity 4/5+.
